SUMMARY:Developments in Manitoba’s Intimate Image Protection Legislation
DESCRIPTION:In 2015, Manitoba was the first Canadian province to enact intimate images protection legislation in response to the growing harm of the non-consensual distribution of such imagery, especially on the internet. Manitoba’s legislation provides for civil recourse against a person who has disseminated an intimate image without consent. It also empowers the Province to designate one or more agencies to receive requests for assistance and provide some or all of the supports set out in section 3 of the legislation to those who have had an intimate image distributed without consent or who believe such distribution is about to occur.\nAs an agency designated under section 4 of the Act, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (“C3P”) provides information and assistance to Manitobans affected by such issues. C3P’s General Counsel Monique St. Germain and Associate General Counsel Debra Danco will provide an overview of C3P’s work in this area, and discuss the two recent legislative amendments aimed at enhancing protections for Manitobans, including new provisions tackling deepfake intimate images.\nPlease RSVP to the Manitoba Bar Association online (link above). The link to join the Zoom meeting will be sent out at approximately 9:30am on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.\nAttendance at this MBA Section learning session can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba’s Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of one hour.\n
