SUMMARY:Injustices and Miscarriages of Justice Experienced by Indigenous Women
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Senator Kim Pate, Independent Senator for Ontario, Territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg\nThree senators are calling for the exoneration of twelve Indigenous women they say endured significant injustices in their interactions with the criminal justice system in a report issued May 16, 2022. The report identifies a number of problematic cases. The lawmakers said the findings in the report are “alarming” and reveal a pattern of systemic racism, misogyny, and abuses of mandatory minimums penalties. Join us as we discuss the report with Senator Kim Pate, which builds a case for a group conviction review and exoneration by the Department of Justice, and calls for the repeal of all mandatory minimums penalties.\nYou can read the article about the report at: Indigenous women disproportionately experience miscarriages of justice, report says – The Lawyer’s Daily (thelawyersdaily.ca) and find the report here: en_full report_injustices and miscarriages of justice experienced by 12 indigenous women_may 16, 202.pdf.\nPlease RSVP (PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED) to the Manitoba Bar Association online at www.cbapd.org.\nIf you are having troubles, please email sections@cba-mb.ca.\nAt approximately 9:30am on Friday, June 24, 2022 an email will be sent from the MBA advising you of the link that you will click on to join the Zoom video conference meeting.  So it will be important to register before 5:00pm on Thursday, June 23, 2022.\nAttendance at this MBA Section meeting can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba’s Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of 1.5 hours.\nWendy Martin White\nCo-Chair, MBA Criminal Justice Section\nMartin White & Associates\nPh: 204-415-9995\nwendy@wmwlaw.ca\nBryton Moen\nCo-Chair, MBA Criminal Justice Section\n
