DESCRIPTION:\n\nJointly presented by The Law Society of Manitoba and\nThe Manitoba Bar Association, Wills, Estates and Trusts Section\n\nPlanning is well underway for a two-day CPD program of interest to lawyers who practice in the area of wills and estates. Preparing wills can seem deceptively easy to new practitioners, however, an aging population and the growth of estate litigation show that preparing wills can be fraught with hidden traps. This will be essential for lawyers starting out in the area, and will serve as a good refresher for more experienced practitioners. Topics will include: file and client management; using precedents and planning forms; testing for capacity; taking and preserving notes; estate planning; and will drafting.\nDay two will touch on more advanced topics. There will be legislative and caselaw updates both locally and nationally, as well as a comprehensive discussion of advanced planning considerations including: beneficiary designations; estate planning agreements; and dealing with blended families.\nRegistrants are strongly encouraged to purchase the 3rd edition of Drafting Wills in Canada: A Lawyer’s Practical Guide.
