MMIWG: Truth, Justice and Reconciliation – Where do lawyers fit in?

MANITOBA BAR ASSOCIATION
ABORIGINAL LAW SECTION
NOTICE OF ONLINE MEETING
SPEAKER: Qajaq Robinson, former Commissioner of the National MMIWG Inquiry
MODERATOR: Jessica Barlow, Jerch Law, Co-Chair of the Manitoba Aboriginal Law Section

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (“MMIWG Inquiry”) Final Report was published on June 3, 2019 and “revealed that persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people.” The Final Report calls for a shift in the current paradigm and transformative legal and social changes to resolve the crisis that has devastated Indigenous communities across the country and delivers 231 individual Calls for Justice directed at governments, institutions, social service providers, industries, and all Canadians. Included in these Calls for Justice are specific Calls for lawyers.

This session will discuss the MMIWG Inquiry, Final Report, the Calls for Justice and begin a conversation of understanding how we, as lawyers, may answer these Calls and incorporate them into our lives and practices, regardless of your area of practice.

Please RSVP (PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED) to the Manitoba Bar Association online at www.cbapd.org.

You will need a computer or laptop (PC or Mac), smartphone or tablet with a microphone and webcam (built-in or external) and an internet connection.

If you will be participating from a laptop, you would also need to install a Zoom Client for Meetings from this site: https://zoom.us/download. If you are unsure whether you have the latest version of Zoom, please follow the instructions HERE.

If you are planning to participate from smartphone or tablet you would need to install an App from the Apple Store or Google Play.   if you are installing the app from the Apple Store or Google Play to use on an iPad, iPhone or Android device or tablet the free app is called “Zoom Cloud Meetings”.

We would recommend that you have either the Zoom Cloud Meetings App or the Zoom Client for Meetings downloaded at least 15 minutes before the meeting.

When you do join, please allow your device to join with audio.  This feature can be found under Join Options in an Apple or Android device or Join with Computer Audio if you are participating on a laptop.

All participants should ensure they have set up their Zoom information to display your actual name (not just your device name) so that everyone knows who is on the call and anyone not invited to attend will be more easily identified, this also helps us properly track attendance at PD sessions.

If you are having troubles, please email sections@cba-mb.ca.

At approximately 9:30am on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 an email will be sent from the MBA advising you of the link that you will click on to join the Zoom video conference meeting.  So it will be important to register before 5:00pm on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

Attendance at this MBA Section meeting can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba’s Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of 1.5 hours.
