Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Family Division of the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench: A Symposium on Challenges and Innovations

In June 1984, the Family Division of the Court of Queen’s Bench was created with specialized judges to hear family law proceedings in one unified court.

On Friday, June 21, 2024, a symposium to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench Family Division will be held at the RBC Convention Centre from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This event will highlight important changes in Manitoba’s family law legislation and the significant improvements made through the development of innovative court case flow models in child protection and family law.

The Honourable Sheilah L. Martin, Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, will provide the keynote address.

Dr. Laurel Sakaluk, board member of the Vanier Institute of the Family will present an “Overview of the Canadian Family”.  Dr. Sakaluk is an enthusiastic professor, with Gender, Family & Policy Studies of the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Alberta.

Professor Emeritus Rollie Thompson, of the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University, will speak on “The Family in the Eyes of the Law”.

The presentations will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with lunch to follow.
