Expert Evidence: Risks and Challenges for the Litigator

SPEAKER: Mona Duckett, Q.C., Dawson, Duckett, Garcia & Johnson (Edmonton)

Mona Duckett, Q.C. was counsel involved in the Meng Wanzhou cross examination of the border officers and appellate counsel in the 2022 Alta CA decision in R. v. Naslund. She lectures regularly for continuing legal education programs for lawyers, judges and police.  She has lectured as a sessional instructor in Advocacy at the University of Alberta Law School, in addition to Professional Responsibility and Advanced Criminal Law. She served for approximately 15 years as a member of the Faculty of the Federation of Canadian Law Societies, National Criminal Law Program. She has produced numerous criminal law papers over the course of her career, and is a co-author of the 2010 criminal text, Trial of Sexual Offences. Mona’s practice and experience spans the entire spectrum of criminal defence and related administrative law, including: professional disciplinary matters, mental disorders, robbery, assaults and murder. She has also developed a well recognized expertise in the preparation and conduct of criminal appeals to both the Alberta Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada.
At this session, Ms Duckett will discuss legal, practical and procedural issues regarding experts and will cover multiple levels of experience.
