Extradition

SPEAKER: Tony Paisana, Peck and Company (Vancouver)

Last December, Wanzhou Meng, CFO of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, was arrested in Vancouver after a request was made by the United States Department of Justice under the Treaty on Extradition Between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States of America. This kicked off a series of events that have frozen the Canada-China relationship. Join us to hear from Tony Paisana, one of the counsel who acted for Ms Meng in her extradition proceedings.  Tony will provide an overview of the Canadian extradition process and emerging issues of interest in this area.

Please RSVP (PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED) to the Manitoba Bar Association online at www.cbapd.org.

You will need a computer or laptop (PC or Mac), smartphone or tablet with a microphone and webcam (built-in or external) and an internet connection.

If you will be participating from a laptop, you would also need to install a Zoom Client for Meetings from this site: https://zoom.us/download. If you are unsure whether you have the latest version of Zoom, please follow the instructions HERE.

If you are planning to participate from smartphone or tablet you would need to install an App from the Apple Store or Google Play.   if you are installing the app from the Apple Store or Google Play to use on an iPad, iPhone or Android device or tablet the free app is called “Zoom Cloud Meetings”.

We would recommend that you have either the Zoom Cloud Meetings App or the Zoom Client for Meetings downloaded at least 15 minutes before the meeting.

When you do join, please allow your device to join with audio.  This feature can be found under Join Options in an Apple or Android device or Join with Computer Audio if you are participating on a laptop.

All participants should ensure they have set up their Zoom information to display your actual name (not just your device name) so that everyone knows who is on the call and anyone not invited to attend will be more easily identified, this also helps us properly track attendance at PD sessions.

If you are having troubles, please email sections@cba-mb.ca.

At approximately 9:30am on Monday, November 15, 2021 an email will be sent from the MBA advising you of the link that you will click on to join the Zoom video conference meeting.  So it will be important to register before 5:00pm on Friday, November 12, 2021.

Attendance at this MBA Section meeting can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba’s Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of 1.5 hours.
