Practising Law at the Speed of Light: Four Strategies to Improve Lawyer Well-Being

In this session, Dr. Larry Richard will share key ideas from his new book, Thin-Skinned: Why Lawyers Are So Low in Resilience, and the New Science That Can Help. The book is co-authored with his wife, licensed psychologist Dr. D’Arcy Lyness.

Dr. Richard will explain why escalating change poses a threat to lawyer well-being, and why we lawyers cope so poorly with criticism, rejection, and other forms of stress. More important, he’ll share with us some of the best evidence-based strategies that any lawyer can deploy to raise their resilience and promote their own well-being.

You’ll learn:

  • The little known but critically important psychological and neurological consequences of uncertainty, and why it affects lawyers worse than almost anyone else
  • The 7 atypical personality traits that most lawyers share, and why understanding them is so important to our well-being
  • Why skepticism is a two-edged sword for lawyers
  • The one single restorative practice that anyone can adopt to increase their well-being
  • 4 evidence-based strategies for continuously fortifying your own wellbeing, with examples for each

The Library will be closed Monday, September 7. We will reopen Tuesday, September 8.
