The Independent Investigation Unit: An Overview of Manitoba’s Police Watchdog

Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) investigates serious incidents involving on- and off-duty police officers across the province that involve death, serious injury, or alleged breaches of the law. The IIU is civilian-led and independent of all police agencies, and has the ability to lay charges against an officer at the end of an investigation. In this webinar we will give an overview of the IIU’s role and what their investigations look like. We will also discuss what witnesses can expect so that individuals feel comfortable contacting the IIU if they or a member of their community might be a witness for an IIU investigation. This webinar is intended for social service professionals, legal professionals, and anyone who is interested in learning more about police oversight in Manitoba. Presented by Bruce Sychuk, Acting Civilian Director of the IIU.

Manitoba Law Library will close at 11am on June 25 for a private event.
Staff will be available by email for research and reference questions.
